Summary:

Consolidated Electrical Distributors, Inc. (CED), one of the country’s largest wholesale electrical equipment distributors with over 700 locations nationwide, has an opening in our Irving, Texas, office for a Corporate Counsel – Labor and Employment. This position will report to the Deputy General Counsel. This position will primarily be focused on labor and employment law but will also include opportunities and responsibilities related to other areas of law and compliance.

Reports to: Deputy General Counsel

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Admitted to the Bar and in good standing (TX Bar preferred, but not required)

  • Ability to provide legal advice to management on significant issues, including the ability to develop, prepare and present legal theories and strategies, and interpret and recommend changes to company policies

  • Ability to gather information, identify trends, and apply findings to assignments while analyzing complex legal information

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and required software applications, including legal research software

  • Successful candidate must have good references, pass pre-employment drug test, successfully complete a background check, as well as be willing to participate in pre-employment assessments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years’ experience as a practicing attorney, with a strong preference for emphasis in employment litigation and/or compliance; in-house counsel and/or large law firm experience preferred

  • Knowledge of advanced concepts, principles, and practices of employment law and regulations across multiple jurisdictions

  • Experience advising and presenting legal theories and strategies to senior corporate management in areas related to employment law, employment compliance, and corporate policy related to employment law and compliance

Essential Job Functions:

  • Employment Law Advice: Counsel managers nationwide regarding all aspects of employment practices, including hiring, termination, discipline, promotion, performance management, and employee employment policies and procedures. Draft and negotiate employment-related contracts, including separation agreement, retention agreements, and employment-related agreements, as needed. Be the subject matter expert on legal and regulatory trends related to employment law and compliance on a national and local level. Responsible for assisting in the supervision of other non-attorney personnel in the Legal Department with respect to employment law matters.

  • Oversee Employment Disputes/Investigations: Oversee and develop strategies regarding matters before the OFCCP, DOL, EEOC and state agencies that enforce employment-related laws. Responsible for directing internal investigations including but not limited to hotline complaints and allegations of theft, harassment, discrimination, retaliation or other improprieties. Will work closely with Internal Audit and field personnel in these matters.

  • General Legal Advisor: Provide legal advice and services regarding a wide range of substantive legal areas (contracts, real estate, insurance coverage, corporate law issues, etc.).

  • Dispute Resolution: Assist management by providing legal advice and representation to negotiate and informally, efficiently and economically resolve disputes involving the company.

  • Litigation Management: Oversee company litigation and manage outside counsel at law firms across the United States. Expected to complete considerable work internally, especially in litigation avoidance and early resolution to reduce reliance on outside counsel and minimize outside costs.

  • Draft and Prepare Training Materials and Management Tools: Identify the need for and prepare regular training materials (including internal online materials) and other management tools to assist company managers to avoid legal exposure and help ensure compliance.

  • Policy Review and Involvement: Tasked with being aware of, reviewing and helping keep current CED’s employment law and compliance related policies. Participate in efforts to prepare, implement, and refine labor and employment practices, policies, guidelines, tools, and programs that align with the company’s strategy, values, and goals.

  • Other Duties: Handle all other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments, particularly those that report to the company’s General Counsel such as Real Estate, Loss Control, Personnel Assessment, and Fleet as needed.
